What is Colpermin for

Colpermin is used for the relief of:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Minor spasms of the gastrointestinal tract
  • Bloating
  • Flatulence

Especially in patients with irritable colon syndrome, also known as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Colpermin and irritable colon syndrome

Irritable colon syndrome, more commonly known as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition in which there can be stomach pain*, spasm and bloating almost anywhere between the groin, the navel, and the sides.

Sometimes these symptoms are accompanied by diarrhoea and constipation. The causes of irritable colon syndrome are not clearly defined, however patients often say that the symptoms are more noticeable with stress and anxiety.

*Patients often refer to “stomach pain” or stomach cramps instead of abdominal cramps or pain. Colpermin relieves abdominal cramps or pain.

Colpermin and diarrhoea and/or constipation

Clinical studies have not shown that Colpermin can help with diarrhoea or constipation. Colpermin relieves abdominal pain or bowel cramps, bloating and flatulence.

Colpermin and flatulence

Bloating and flatulence are very common symptoms of irritable colon syndrome*. Bloating is due to trapped gas which can lead to burping or flatulence. More commonly known as ‘passing wind’, flatulence is expelling gas from the digestive system through the anus. Whereas this is often laughed about, excessive flatulence can be embarrassing.

Swallowing air, known as ‘aerophagia’, may also cause bloating and flatulence. When people are under stress, they tend to swallow more air. Colpermin’s active substance, which is pure, peppermint oil, relaxes spasm of the bowel wall. This relieves pain and helps trapped wind to pass along the bowel and out of the body.

*Also known as irritable bowel syndrome, IBS

How does Colpermin™ work

Colpermin and peppermint oil

With its peppermint oil active substance Colpermin has been relieving the symptoms of irritable colon syndrome for hundreds of thousands of patients across more than 20 countries for the last 40 years.

Dual acting
Colpermin’s active substance, which is pure, natural peppermint oil, relieves IBS symptoms by acting in 2 ways (dual acting):

  1. Relaxing spasm of the bowel wall. It does this by acting on one of the root causes of cramps in the wall of your gut to stop cramping and relieve pain.
  2. Helping trapped gas to pass along the bowel and out of the body. This relieves bloating and flatulence.

Special capsule design
Colpermin is also designed to work in the place where the problem is:

Targeted release
The capsule outer coating does not dissolve until it reaches the small intestine. Therefore, no peppermint oil can be released until the small intestine.

Sustained release
The gel inside the capsule releases the peppermint oil continuously as it moves along the gut. Delivering relief to the areas of the gut where it may be needed.

Relaxes spasms

Releases trapped gas

Colpermin acts as a local medicine, in the intestine and also in the colon.

How fast does Colpermin work

Peppermint oil starts to be released within about 20 minutes after taking Colpermin, but not until it reaches the intestine, Peppermint oil from Colpermin continues to be released for hours. However, Colpermin may need to be taken for some days until symptoms subside, for the majority of people this is within two weeks.

If symptoms persist or worsen for over two weeks after using Colpermin capsules, consult with a doctor or pharmacist. Treatment may be continued for a maximum of 3 months. Treatment can be repeated if needed.

Note: Colpermin should be taken only with an empty stomach, 2 hours before or after meals, to make sure the capsule passes through the stomach and does not release peppermint oil too early.

For more information on when not to take Colpermin, please read the Colpermin patient information leaflet.
